The Walt Disney Company and Comcast’s NBC Universal have filed a 110-page copyright infringement lawsuit against Midjourney, a developer of generative AI technology. The complaint alleges that Midjourney unlawfully incorporates and copies famous characters from both companies, including Darth Vader, Shrek, Homer Simpson, and Spider-Man. Disney previously issued a cease-and-desist notice to Midjourney last year, while NBC Universal also sent a similar notice without receiving a response. The lawsuit highlights escalating tensions between major media companies and tech firms focused on AI, as they claim that proprietary content is being used without permission or compensation. This lawsuit follows earlier actions, such as the New York Times suing other AI companies like OpenAI for similar concerns regarding unauthorized scraping of content to train AI models. Midjourney has yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit, while OpenAI has called its own legal issues “meritless.”
