Disney and Comcast Launch a Battle Against AI, Targeting Midjourney as Their First Move

admin

Walt Disney Co. and Comcast Corp. have jointly filed a lawsuit against the AI image generator Midjourney, accusing it of copyright infringement for creating unauthorized images of characters like Darth Vader and Homer Simpson. The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, seeks damages of up to $150,000 per violation. Both companies previously requested that Midjourney cease using their content but received inadequate responses. Launched in 2022, Midjourney has gained popularity for its viral AI-generated creations, yet its training process involves using numerous online images, some of which are owned by Disney and Comcast. While the AI community argues this practice is fair use, there is increasing concern among content owners about the exploitation of intellectual property. Interestingly, both Disney and Comcast are not opposed to AI; they are also exploring its use, exemplified by Disney’s collaboration with Epic Games to replicate Darth Vader’s voice. This case could significantly influence copyright dynamics in AI.
