Disney’s Cease-and-Desist Highlights Industry Backlash Against New Seedance 2.0 AI Tool

The Walt Disney Company has escalated tensions with ByteDance over its new AI tool, Seedance 2.0, by issuing a cease-and-desist letter. Disney accuses ByteDance of incorporating a pirated library of its copyrighted characters from franchises like Star Wars and Marvel, violating its intellectual property rights. Disney describes this as “willful and pervasive” infringement, expressing concerns that this is just the beginning of potential copyright violations. Industry voices, including the Motion Picture Association and the performers union SAG-AFTRA, have also condemned Seedance 2.0 for unauthorized use of member voices and likenesses. SAG-AFTRA likened the tool to a deepfake, undermining human performers’ livelihoods and ethical standards. The Human Artistry Campaign, which includes various creator organizations, echoed these sentiments, calling the tool’s launch a threat to creators. As of now, ByteDance has yet to respond to these allegations amid growing industry backlash.
