CBS News analyzed these images, using reverse image searches and AI detection tools, though the latter can be inconsistent. After President Trump announced Maduro’s capture, viral images emerged, including one widely shared by Coral Gables Mayor Vince Lago, which was confirmed likely edited through Google’s SynthID. A manipulated video purportedly showing Maduro’s escort by military personnel was posted hours before official reports. While inconsistent AI tools examined various images for authenticity, many remained unverified. Additionally, old footage and photos were misrepresented to imply recent events, further confusing users. CBS reached out to social media platforms about policies on AI imagery but received no response. Both X and Meta aim to combat misinformation but may still allow synthetic media without proper labeling.
