The Pentagon is exploring the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning into zero trust cybersecurity assessments across the Department of Defense (DOD). A request for information (RFI) from the Zero Trust Portfolio Management Office (ZT PfMO) highlights the need for innovative technologies to enhance “purple team assessments,” combining offensive and defensive security evaluations. These assessments are crucial for meeting the DOD’s zero trust strategy, which mandates that all IT environments comply with specific zero trust activities by fiscal 2027. To scale these assessments efficiently and accurately, the Pentagon seeks solutions that leverage automation, AI, and machine learning. The RFI solicits industry input on using these technologies to automate purple team activities, simulate attack scenarios, and evaluate security effectiveness. Vendors are also asked to identify potential challenges associated with implementing AI-driven tools. Responses are due by February 9, 2026.
