Dong Nai Student Develops AI App to Enhance Communication Accessibility

A high school student from Dong Nai, Phan Hai Dang, has developed an innovative application aimed at supporting individuals with visual and hearing impairments. His project, titled “A Multi-functional Support System for the Deaf and Blind,” utilizes deep learning technology to facilitate communication and safe mobility. Unlike typical programming projects, Dang’s app converts sign language into text and speech, making interactions seamless for both deaf and hearing individuals. It employs advanced AI algorithms like YOLOv8 for object detection and ArcFace for facial recognition.

The application enhances user experience by recognizing emotional cues through facial movements and aiding navigation for visually impaired users with audio warnings. Practical features include traffic light recognition and currency denomination reading. With guidance from mentor Bui Kim Minh, Dang’s project achieved 95% accuracy in sign language recognition, earning him top awards at both provincial and national levels. His commitment exemplifies how technology can serve and empower the community.
