Eight Additional Newspapers File Lawsuit Against OpenAI and Microsoft, Claiming Unauthorized Use of Content in AI Applications

On November 26, eight newspapers owned by MediaNews Group (MNG) filed a civil lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, alleging copyright infringement. The newspapers, including the Los Angeles Daily News and Boston Herald, claim that OpenAI and Microsoft illegally used their original content to develop large language models for AI applications, seeking over $10 billion in damages. Attorney Steven Lieberman stated that OpenAI compensates its technology but “steals” content from journalists without payment or permission. MNG’s executive editor, Frank Pine, emphasized the harm to the journalism industry and audience engagement due to this alleged theft. A similar lawsuit was previously filed by MNG in April 2024, covering additional publications. The legal battle highlights ongoing tensions between content owners and tech giants over copyright issues in artificial intelligence development. OpenAI and Microsoft have not yet commented on the lawsuit.
