Elon Musk Accuses Apple of Manipulating App Store AI Rankings, but X Data Suggests Otherwise

Elon Musk has accused Apple of unfairly promoting OpenAI’s ChatGPT in the App Store rankings, alleging this constitutes an “unequivocal antitrust violation.” Musk claims that such favoritism prevents other AI companies from reaching the top spot. Following Apple’s partnership with OpenAI in June 2024, data indicates other AI apps, including DeepSeek and Perplexity AI, achieved the number one position. Musk’s own AI venture, xAI, also experienced success with its Grok app, which hit number one after making its Grok-3 model free. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, openly contested Musk’s claims, suggesting Musk manipulates his platform, X, to protect his interests. Despite Musk’s legal threats, Apple defended its App Store practices, emphasizing fairness and unbiased app promotions. Moreover, while ChatGPT remains popular, it faced competition, as it was not the most downloaded app of 2024. The dynamics in the App Store highlight a competitive landscape for AI applications.
