Emerging AI Landscape Overshadows Labor Day – Lowell Sun

As we celebrate Labor Day Weekend, the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on the workforce is a critical issue for both workers and policymakers. Recent reports indicate that over 50% of core skills in 15 job types may face significant disruption due to AI automation. Positions like office clerks and accountants could be most affected, with 40-50% of their skills at risk. Massachusetts is working to enhance its AI competitiveness, with initiatives like the $100 million AI Hub aimed at training talent from K-12 to mid-career. However, the state is facing a retention issue, with only 40% of AI-trained graduates staying. AI is already affecting entry-level jobs, notably in software engineering and customer service, with early-career roles experiencing a 13% employment drop since 2022. Society must balance embracing AI while ensuring the next generation of skilled labor is not left behind.
