Employee Embraces AI at Work, Only to Be Replaced by the Technology He Supported

When faced with a boss’s insistence to adopt AI technology in the workplace, employees often grapple with a tough decision: comply or resist. The experience of Kevin Cantera from New Mexico illustrates this dilemma. After embracing AI tools like ChatGPT, Cantera, a dedicated employee of 17 years, was ultimately replaced by a large language model despite assurances from management that he wouldn’t be. Ironically, he had found AI to be an incredible writing aid, enhancing his productivity.

This scenario is not unique; many companies are opting to replace human workers with AI, leading to frustrating workflows and inadequate output that burden remaining staff. Studies, including research from MIT, reveal that 95% of firms incorporating AI saw little to no revenue growth, raising concerns about quality assurance without experts in the loop. The critical question remains: should you comply with demands for AI use? If replacement seems inevitable, consider asserting your own terms before transitioning.
