Employees Rush to Create Custom AI Apps, Ignoring Security Concerns

Recent findings from Netskope reveal a 50% surge in enterprise adoption of Generative AI (GenAI) platforms, driven by employee demand for custom AI applications. These platforms, essential for creating AI tools, are the fastest-growing category of shadow AI, which poses significant security risks as over 50% of app usage is unsanctioned. Organizations are increasingly leveraging LLM interfaces with 34% already utilizing them; Ollama leads in adoption. Additionally, the tracking of GenAI SaaS applications has skyrocketed from 317 to over 1,550 in just a few months. With a notable increase in network traffic associated with GenAI, security teams must adapt, enhancing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) strategies and implementing real-time user coaching. Popular tools like Microsoft Azure OpenAI (29%) and GitHub Copilot (39%) are becoming integral as enterprises navigate this rapid growth, emphasizing the need for secure, innovative AI integration.
