A new initiative, TEACH-AI, aims to educate K-12 teachers on using artificial intelligence (AI) in an environmentally sustainable way, addressing concerns about AI’s ecological impact. Launched by researchers from UC Irvine, Indiana University Bloomington, and the University of Bremen, TEACH-AI develops courses focusing on AI’s role in understanding and addressing climate change. Asli Sezen-Barrie, a project creator, emphasizes the need for educators to assess the environmental costs of AI, especially given that American data centers might consume comparable water to 10 million people. The course titled “An Education for Sustainable Futures” will enhance AI literacy while fostering discourse on its implications for climate education. It encourages future educators to critically evaluate AI tools and their alignment with educational goals. This initiative highlights the potential of education to foster informed action against climate change, merging technology with environmental awareness.
