The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is significantly enhancing hurricane forecasting through AI, particularly in the 2025 season. AI models, including the partnership with Google DeepMind, allow for faster predictions by analyzing vast historical datasets. Unlike traditional numerical weather prediction (NWP) models that solve atmospheric equations, AI weather prediction (AIWP) models learn relationships between variables to generate forecasts. This new methodology introduces diverse outcomes, aiding forecasters in effectively communicating hurricane risks. The integration of these AI tools is ongoing, with the NHC focusing on understanding their strengths for operational use. AI systems offer rapid computation and extensive ensemble forecasting, enhancing decision-making during storms. However, human expertise remains essential, as AI cannot entirely replace forecasters. NHC is committed to continually improving hurricane forecasts to protect lives and property, incorporating advanced technologies while ensuring trusted and coherent risk communication.
