Enhancing Surgical Precision: AI-Driven Tissue Differentiation for Advanced Surgical Tools

Share

Dr. Soha Yousuf, a Postdoctoral Fellow at New York University Abu Dhabi, is pioneering research that enhances decision-making tools for orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures. Her study reveals unique biomolecular signatures in commonly encountered tissues, filling gaps left by traditional techniques. By employing Raman spectroscopy and interpretable machine learning, Yousuf identifies key Raman biomarkers that distinguish various tissue types, improving the transparency and accuracy of surgical guidance. The developed models achieve high classification performance, offering molecular-level insights that support real-time, informed surgical decisions. This innovative approach aids in constructing smart technologies that enable safer and more precise surgery. Yousuf’s work also advances Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) platforms for biomedical applications. She earned her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Khalifa University, UAE. This research showcases the intersection of optical sensing, machine learning, and surgical technology, promoting safer surgical practices. Source: American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery.
