Australia has announced groundbreaking measures to protect children from harmful interactions with AI chatbots. eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant revealed six new codes under the Online Safety Act, aimed at preventing children from engaging in sexual, violent, or harmful conversations. These regulations require tech companies to implement age verification mechanisms before deploying AI chatbots. Many Australian children, particularly ages 10 to 11, are reportedly spending up to six hours daily interacting with these chatbots, often of a sexualized nature. Inman Grant emphasized the need for immediate industry change, citing tragic incidents linked to chatbot interactions. New safeguards are also being introduced by OpenAI, allowing parents to monitor their children’s activities. Effective December 10, platforms will be mandated to identify and restrict access for users under 16. The initiative aims to combat the escalating risks associated with AI technology among youth.
