French AI company Mistral launched “AI for Citizens,” aiming to collaborate with governments and public institutions to enhance public services through AI. Mistral emphasizes the need for countries to have control over AI developments, rather than being dominated by large corporations like Amazon and Google. This initiative comes as Mistral joins about 50 European firms advocating for a delay in implementing the EU’s AI Act, which focuses on ensuring AI systems are safe, transparent, and non-discriminatory. The Act includes provisions such as banning real-time facial recognition in public spaces and imposing governance standards on high-risk AI systems. Critics, like the advocacy group Corporate Observatory Europe, argue that calls to postpone the Act serve Big Tech interests and pose risks related to biased AI applications. As American firms push for their own regulatory leniencies, Europe’s challenge is to balance innovation with civil society’s concerns regarding AI regulation.
