The European Commission is investigating Grok, an AI tool integrated into X (formerly Twitter), for potentially violating the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) due to the use of sexually explicit images, including potential child sexual abuse material. This response follows public outrage over manipulated images of children. EU Commissioner Henna Virkunen stated that sexual deepfakes are an unacceptable violation of rights, especially for women and children. The Commission is assessing whether X has fulfilled its legal obligations under the DSA, as no risk assessment for Grok has been presented. Coordinating with Ireland’s Coimisiún na Meán, the Commission emphasized the need for online platforms to mitigate systemic risks and comply with EU regulations. This investigation also extends to X’s recommender systems, raising concerns about their impact on user safety. EU officials demand strict accountability in protecting citizens online, emphasizing that no entity is above the law.
