The European Union has initiated a formal investigation into Meta, focusing on antitrust issues stemming from AI restrictions imposed on WhatsApp. This probe is crucial to “prevent any possible irreparable harm to competition in the AI space,” following Meta’s policy changes, effective October 15, which prohibit businesses from using WhatsApp’s API to distribute third-party AI chatbots. The European Commission noted that these restrictions could block competing AI providers while allowing Meta’s own service, “Meta AI,” continued access. Existing AI providers will face the updated policies starting January 15, 2026. The investigation will determine if Meta’s actions violate EU laws against abusing a dominant market position, with potential fines reaching 10% of its global annual revenue, equating to $16.45 billion. European competition commissioner Teresa Ribera emphasized the need for fair competition to ensure that citizens and businesses benefit from the thriving AI market in Europe.
