Elon Musk’s social media platform X is facing scrutiny from the European Union due to concerns over its AI tool, Grok. Since its launch in 2024, Grok allows users to generate text and images, but officials worry it has been misused to create sexualized content, potentially putting EU citizens at risk. The investigation will assess if X appropriately managed the risks associated with Grok, particularly concerning illegal content and child sexual abuse material. Henna Virkkunen, Executive VP for Tech Sovereignty, emphasized the severity of sexual deepfakes. The inquiry will also evaluate X’s compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates online platforms to address illegal content and user protection. Failure to meet these obligations could result in fines of up to $150 million. As the EU progresses its investigation, Musk has publicly criticized regulatory actions, calling them censorship. Users affected by AI-generated illegal content are encouraged to seek national support.
