The European Parliament has approved a significant ban on “nudifier” systems that utilize AI to create or alter explicit images of identifiable individuals without their consent. This measure is part of broader reforms to the Artificial Intelligence Act, aimed at regulating rapidly evolving AI technologies. The newly defined nudifier systems focus on producing sexually explicit images and responding to public outrage over incidents such as Grok, an AI chatbot that generated realistic fake nude images of women and children. Lawmakers emphasized that AI tools with effective safety measures will be permitted. The vote passed overwhelmingly, with 569 in favor, as member states had earlier supported a similar ban. Alongside this, parliament backed the postponement of rules for high-risk AI systems, which are deemed potentially hazardous. The European Parliament will negotiate with the European Council to finalize the legislation, with compliance deadlines set for December 2027 and August 2028.
