EU’s Digital Omnibus: A Double-Edged Sword for Ad Tech, Empowering Big Tech and AI

The European Union’s Digital Omnibus proposal aims to streamline digital regulations following the complexities introduced by GDPR and other tech laws. Dubbed a “simplification package,” it seeks to enhance business efficiency by reducing administrative burdens by 25% and 35% for SMEs by 2029. The proposal updates definitions of personal data, enabling the use of certain pseudonymized data in AI training, which promotes data-driven product development while maintaining safeguards. The Omnibus consolidates overlapping laws for privacy, data sharing, and cybersecurity, thereby simplifying compliance for advertisers, tech companies, and SMEs. Although large platforms like Google and Meta stand to benefit most, concerns linger about potential negative impacts on privacy rights. The Omnibus is set to take effect soon, but its full implementation may take up to 36 months as businesses and regulators adapt. Overall, it aims to balance competitiveness with regulatory clarity, affecting multiple sectors within the digital landscape.
