Examine Netflix’s Legal Correspondence with ByteDance Regarding the Popular AI Tool, Seedance

Netflix has taken a firm stand against ByteDance’s new AI video tool, Seedance 2.0, by issuing a cease-and-desist letter. The streaming service labels Seedance as “a high-speed piracy engine,” particularly after it generated videos mimicking iconic characters from popular shows like “Stranger Things” and “Bridgerton.” User-generated content resembling celebrities, such as Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, sparked concerns within the industry, emphasizing the threat to original intellectual property. Netflix argues that creating competing products using copyrighted works violates fair use, and demands ByteDance cease generating such content, remove infringing videos, and clarify instances of copyright infringement. Disney has raised similar alarms regarding unauthorized use of its characters in Seedance. Both companies are addressing the critical issue of intellectual property rights in the evolving landscape of generative AI technologies. ByteDance acknowledges the concerns and is working to enhance safeguards against unauthorized content creation.
