Examining Hair Bias in AI: The Impact of Algorithms on Black Women’s Hairstyles

In August 2025, an experiment highlighted stark biases in AI evaluations of hairstyles for Black and white women. Using ChatGPT’s DALL-E, researchers created images of Black and white women, altering only their hairstyles. Analyses by Clarifai, Amazon Rekognition, and Anthropic’s Claude revealed that Black hairstyles, especially braids, were often labeled with lower intelligence traits, affecting workplace perceptions of competence. In contrast, white women’s hairstyles faced no penalties, showcasing a disparity in AI assessments. For Black women, hairstyle variations could result in misidentification during hiring processes or workplace access, reinforcing Eurocentric beauty standards. This reflects broader societal biases, which AI mirrors. Addressing these issues requires education on hair discrimination, adherence to laws like the CROWN Act, and inclusive grooming policies. Ensuring objective hiring criteria and maintaining human oversight in AI decisions can mitigate these biases, fostering a more equitable job market for all women.
