A Danish researcher, Nicklas Brendborg, cautioned that new AI-powered video generators like OpenAI’s Sora and Meta’s Vibes could enhance endless scrolling behaviors on social media. Brendborg highlighted that AI is becoming increasingly influential in video content, making it harder for users to disengage from their devices. He referred to these apps as tools that utilize user behavior data, potentially manipulating content to retain attention. Furthermore, he likened AI-driven social media to a “one-armed thief,” exploiting the brain’s reward system, akin to slot machines, to keep users engaged, even amid repeated failures. To combat this addictive nature, Brendborg suggested strategies such as changing phone screens to black and white, blocking attention-grabbing apps, and avoiding device usage upon waking up. As AI continues evolving, the risks associated with excessive social media consumption are likely to grow, calling for awareness and proactive measures to mitigate addiction.
