A state health official revealed on March 17 that the AI tool aims to expedite reviews and identify potential fraud related to payment errors. David Knezek from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services stated that this tool will enhance efficiency by targeting cases with a high likelihood of errors.
Despite its intended efficiency, experts like Michele Gilman caution against mislabeling innocent mistakes as fraud, emphasizing the complexities of SNAP. Historically, Michigan’s use of technology in benefit systems has faced challenges; the MiDAS system wrongly accused countless residents of fraud, leading to severe financial consequences.
