During a recent workshop in Vijayawada organized by the Central Groundwater Board (CGWB), experts highlighted the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI) in managing groundwater resources. CGWB Member N Varadaraj emphasized that challenges such as climate change and over-extraction necessitate AI-driven models for accurate predictions of groundwater storage and recharge. The workshop released significant reports, including the Dynamic Groundwater Resources–2025 and NAQUIM 1.0 & 2.0, attracting over 150 participants from various departments. Researchers reported that Andhra Pradesh has mapped 1.46 lakh sq. km of aquifer, with 601 units classified as safe. Officials stressed the urgency for conservation, especially in vulnerable areas, to ensure long-term sustainability of groundwater resources. KN Jyothikumar underlined the need to monitor groundwater quality, citing contamination issues. The Director of the Andhra Pradesh Groundwater and Water Audit Department noted ongoing real-time data collection efforts to enhance resource management. The session ended with a call for collective responsibility in safeguarding water resources for future generations.
