Exploring Generative AI Adoption: Which European Countries Lead the Way with ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and More?

Generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) has transitioned from an emerging technology to an everyday necessity across Europe. In 2025, about a third of individuals aged 16–74 engaged with AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, as reported by Eurostat. Usage varies significantly, with Norway leading at 56% and Turkey lagging at 17%. Twelve countries report over 40% usage, while eight fall below 25%. The divide in Gen AI adoption often correlates with a nation’s digital infrastructure; advanced digital nations like Denmark excel, whereas others struggle due to a lack of awareness or understanding. Personal use dominates over work-related applications, with 25% of EU users utilizing AI for personal tasks compared to just 15% for work. Additionally, formal education adoption remains particularly low, at only 9%, highlighting a gap in AI literacy and practical application. Understanding these regional disparities is crucial for promoting Gen AI across Europe.
