The Google News Initiative (GNI) Local Language pilot, in collaboration with the Media Development & Diversity Agency (MDDA) and Daily Maverick, aimed to empower community newsrooms through digital skills and AI resources in local languages. Recognizing that many community publishers miss out on training due to language barriers and limited internet access, GNI directly engaged with local outlets, offering workshops in Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi, and English over 5,800 km across five provinces. This initiative successfully trained 177 local language publishers on digital tools, audience analytics, and revenue strategies, fostering a sustainable digital future for these platforms. The program emphasized that access to news in local languages enhances citizen engagement. Lessons learned include the importance of localized training, hands-on practice, and the need for offline resources. Future efforts will focus on enhancing community collaboration and providing inclusive digital education, thereby bridging information gaps and promoting responsible AI usage in journalism.
