Exploring the Benefits and Challenges of Increasing AI Adoption in Education

A new report from the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) highlights the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools, outpacing necessary policies and training to safeguard students. The report reveals increasing usage of AI among teachers (85%) and students (86%) for tasks like lesson planning and tutoring. However, it raises concerns about privacy, academic integrity, and social well-being, identifying key risks such as data breaches, tech-enabled bullying, and inadequate AI-driven interactions. Many educators believe AI enhances personalized instruction (80%) but also complicates grading and assessment, with nearly 75% worried about its impact on critical thinking. Furthermore, it found that AI influences student-teacher relationships, with a significant portion of students preferring AI over human interaction. Despite its prevalence, less than half of the surveyed individuals received AI-related training, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive AI literacy programs in schools to ensure safe and responsible usage.
