OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently addressed the “Dead Internet Theory,” suggesting that a significant portion of online activity is driven by AI rather than humans. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he expressed surprise at the prevalence of AI-generated accounts, directly linking the rise of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to this phenomenon. Defined over a decade ago on forums like 4chan, the theory posits that the internet is increasingly filled with synthetic content, creating an illusion of human activity while much interaction is automated. Recent advances in generative AI have only intensified this issue, enabling bots to produce complex narratives and viral content that mimic genuine engagement. Furthermore, studies have revealed that bot-driven accounts significantly contribute to misinformation. While human interaction persists, it now exists alongside a growing backdrop of synthetic content. Altman’s World Network aims to combat this challenge by implementing biometric verification to help distinguish real users from bots.
