Facebook Launches AI Technology to Analyze Users’ Mobile Photos

Facebook has launched an optional AI feature that scans users’ phone camera rolls to identify shareworthy photos and videos, enhancing its use of AI across platforms. Currently rolling out in the U.S. and Canada, this feature accesses unpublished media on users’ devices and allows them to upload it to Meta’s cloud. The AI sifts through images to find “hidden gems,” suggesting edits and collages for enhanced sharing. Meta emphasizes that this feature is voluntary and operates solely with user consent; unpublished photos won’t be used for AI training unless users choose to edit or publish suggestions. The data is not meant for advertising, although some information may be retained for technical reasons. While intended to assist users in improving their photos, privacy concerns arise regarding data use and user consent. The rollout aims to create a convenient experience, although it also raises questions about surveillance. Expanding to Instagram remains unconfirmed.
