A recent survey by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) reveals a concerning trend in higher education regarding AI adoption. While 90% of faculty report AI integration in teaching and research, 71% indicate that administrators predominantly control discussions about AI implementation, marginalizing faculty voices. This lack of shared governance undermines academic autonomy and raises concerns about job security and pedagogical integrity. Though only 15% of faculty are mandated to use AI, many unwittingly engage with AI-integrated educational technologies, raising fears of diminished critical thinking among students. Faculty expressed worry that AI does not alleviate their workload and may negatively impact student success. The AAUP report highlights the urgent need for institutions to include faculty in AI decision-making, ensure data privacy, and protect academic freedom. Recommendations include robust professional development on AI, options for opting out of tech use, and clear policies governing AI’s educational role to foster informed and equitable adoption.
