Faro Teens Unveil Innovative AI App for Skin Cancer Detection at National Science Fair

Two high school students from Faro, Yukon, Olive Passmore and Lilou Lefebvre, have developed an AI-powered tool designed to detect skin cancer early, aimed at improving rural health care. Observing healthcare challenges in their community, such as limited equipment and staff, they created an app that allows users to photograph skin spots for analysis. Their project earned them a spot at the 2025 Canada-Wide Science Fair, after gaining recognition at the Yukon Stikine Regional Science Fair. The app, designed for use without internet access, helps prioritize patients based on risk levels from the images analyzed by AI, potentially reducing the six-month wait for specialist consultations. The students self-taught themselves coding and app development using online resources, with support from their parents. They hope their project not only garners accolades but also brings about meaningful change in access to medical care in remote areas.
