Fermi America and Texas Tech Unveil Ambitious $11 Billion HyperGrid AI Campus Plan

Share

The Texas Tech University System is collaborating with Fermi America to establish the Advanced Energy and Intelligence Campus near Amarillo, touted as the world’s largest advanced energy and AI facility. Spanning roughly 5,800 acres, it will feature 18 million square feet of AI data centers powered by up to 11 gigawatts from various energy sources, including nuclear, solar, and wind. The initiative, supported by former Energy Secretary Rick Perry, aims to meet the rising energy needs linked to AI infrastructure and aligns with recent federal efforts to bolster U.S. competitiveness in technology and clean energy. Expected to generate educational and research opportunities, the project includes internships and a dedicated academic facility. Geotechnical work is underway, with hopes to launch the first gigawatt of capacity by late 2026. While environmental scrutiny surrounds large AI campuses, the Texas Tech system anticipates significant regional benefits from this historic endeavor.
