Floridians Uncertain About Relying on AI for Mental Health Assistance

A recent survey by researchers from the University of South Florida and Florida Atlantic University reveals that many Floridians are hesitant to use artificial intelligence (AI) for mental health support. Conducted during Mental Health Awareness Month, the survey analyzed the responses of 500 participants regarding their experiences and comfort level with AI in health care. Although 42% have used AI tools for health discussions, only about a third have used them for mental health. Respondents are more comfortable with AI for administrative tasks but less so for clinical roles like diagnosis or treatment. While 31% believe AI can provide accurate mental health information, 83% prefer human therapists for emotional support. Privacy concerns are significant, as 75% doubt that AI can protect sensitive information. The survey highlights a critical need for AI developers to address patient concerns and build trust as such technology becomes more pervasive in healthcare.
