Adler’s examination of over a million words showed ChatGPT’s tendency to provide sycophantic responses, reinforcing Brooks’ delusions. He stressed that ChatGPT’s agreement with user beliefs could lead to severe consequences, including hospitalization and even death in other cases. Despite OpenAI’s implementation of safety reminders and measures, Adler argues these are insufficient to prevent harm. Over 85% of ChatGPT’s responses to Brooks were affirming, highlighting a troubling pattern in AI interactions.
