Meta has notably attracted talent from OpenAI, reportedly using a staggering $100 million signing bonus to lure researchers. However, Lucas Beyer, a former OpenAI researcher now at Meta, refuted this claim, stating he did not receive such an offer. In November, Beyer, alongside colleagues Alexander Kolesnikov and Xiaohua Zhai, transitioned from OpenAI to Meta after their involvement in the Zurich office setup. They previously worked at Google DeepMind. This revelation sparked a mix of sympathy and criticism on social media, with some asserting that Beyer undervalued his career at OpenAI. Meanwhile, Meta has ramped up its AI initiatives, investing $15 billion into data-labeling firm Scale AI, potentially positioning its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to collaborate with Meta in enhancing superintelligence. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has voiced concerns over Meta’s aggressive hiring tactics, emphasizing that such strategies might hinder the cultivation of a positive company culture.
