Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, has launched Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund managing $1.5 billion despite his lack of investing experience. Graduating valedictorian from Columbia University at just 19, Aschenbrenner gained recognition for a 165-page manifesto detailing the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI). His firm focuses on artificial general intelligence (AGI) and aims to capitalize on burgeoning AI investments, predicting trillions of dollars in corporate spending for AI infrastructure. The fund’s investment strategy includes stocks in data centers, chip makers, and other sectors expected to thrive from AI advancements, while also shorting sectors likely to decline. In the first half of 2025, Situational Awareness reported a remarkable 47% return, outpacing the S&P 500’s 6% gain. The strong investor backing includes notable figures like Stripe’s Collison brothers, reflecting confidence in Aschenbrenner’s vision of an aggressive AI investment landscape.
