Chromebooks, traditionally viewed as basic “Android PCs,” are undergoing a transformation with the integration of Gemini AI into ChromeOS. This update introduces features that enhance functionality significantly on Chromebook Plus models. Users can now use “Select to Search” for quick information gathering, a “Simplify” tool for easier content comprehension, and a “Help Me Read” feature to summarize lengthy texts. The Quick Insert key also benefits from Gemini-powered image generation and smart suggestions. Google is also implementing on-device AI capabilities, such as Smart tab grouping and AI photo editing, which reduce latency and improve performance. The new Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the first to support these advancements, with plans for additional models from Asus and HP. Alongside these changes, Google is bundling a free year of its AI Pro plan with new devices, aiming to reposition Chromebooks in the market, which continues to grow, especially in education and budget segments.
