Google has announced that its AI assistant, Gemini, is replacing Google Assistant in Maps, enhancing user navigation seamlessly. Available now, Gemini’s integration includes support for Google Lens. The former microphone symbol in Maps has transitioned to a blue spark icon. Users can activate Gemini by saying “Hey Google” while navigating—be it by public transport, walking, cycling, or driving. Commands include basic navigation (e.g., “Navigate home”), route queries (e.g., “What’s my next turn?”), and place searches (e.g., “Find me a cafe near my destination”). Multi-step prompts are also supported, allowing users to ask for recommendations or create calendar events. Additionally, users can report journey issues directly to Gemini, such as traffic or construction. This AI-driven experience ensures access to apps and extensions, including email summaries and music playback. Gemini’s rollout is set to take place on both Android and iOS within weeks, promising improved navigation and usability.
