Apple is set to launch a major Siri revamp with the iOS 26.4 update in spring 2024, following the features demonstrated at WWDC 2024. While Siri’s enhanced AI capabilities are anticipated, there are reports that some iPhone users may be able to replace Siri with third-party voice assistants like Google’s Gemini as early as iOS 26.2. However, this option is limited to Japan due to the new Mobile Software Competition Act, mandating smartphone manufacturers to allow alternative services. Users in Japan won’t just be able to switch assistants via settings, as developers must integrate this functionality into their apps. The new default assistant will be activated through a long-press on the Side Button, but there are uncertainties regarding voice command access for third-party assistants and continued Siri functionality. In the European Union, similar changes are anticipated, although Siri currently remains the default. This shift emphasizes Apple’s compliance with global competition regulations.
