Gemini Embraces ChatGPT: Google Introduces Chat Memory, Enhanced Personalization, Private Mode, and New Privacy Features

Google has rolled out updates to its Gemini AI app, introducing a “Personal context” feature that allows the app to remember past conversations and personalize responses. For instance, if you mention favorite authors, Gemini can later recommend similar books. While this enhancement aims to create a more engaging experience, it raises privacy concerns as users may unknowingly share more personal data, since the memory feature is enabled by default. Users wanting to opt out must manually disable the memory setting or delete past conversations. The new “Temporary Chat” mode allows for one-off conversations; however, these chats are stored for up to 72 hours before deletion, offering limited privacy. Google also rebranded “Gemini Apps Activity” to “Keep Activity,” affecting how uploads improve services. Despite assurances of user control, navigating settings to preserve privacy may overwhelm many, echoing concerns similar to those raised with OpenAI’s ChatGPT regarding data retention and user profiles.
