German Data Protection Chief Calls for Apple and Google to Remove DeepSeek from App Stores

A German data protection official, Meike Kamp, has reported the Chinese AI app DeepSeek to Apple and Google due to concerns over illegal data transfers to China. Kamp emphasized that DeepSeek failed to demonstrate sufficient protections for user data as required by EU laws. She highlighted the extensive access rights Chinese authorities have over personal data linked to Chinese companies. Her office had urged DeepSeek to comply with EU regulations regarding data transfers or to remove the app from Germany, but the company did not respond accordingly. Earlier in the year, Italy banned DeepSeek from its app stores over similar privacy issues. Consumer privacy advocates in the EU raised concerns about DeepSeek’s operations being based in China, where user data is stored. Apple and Google have not yet commented on the report regarding the app.
