GitHub’s CEO, Thomas Dohmke, addressed the evolving landscape of AI tools for startups at VivaTech in Paris. He noted that while AI tools have made it easier for non-technical founders to launch startups with small teams, scaling those businesses still requires technical expertise. He observed a shift from skepticism to “fear of missing out” (FOMO) in adopting AI technologies. Although AI coding assistants can facilitate product development, standing out to investors has become more challenging due to competition. Dohmke emphasized that bootstrapped startups largely reliant on AI tools may lack true value without a deep understanding of their systems. He argued that non-technical founders often struggle to scale operations without developers. While he lauded the excitement of the current AI engineering boom, he stressed the importance of coding education and the need for engineers to continuously learn effective AI integration and prompting skills.
