GM to Unveil Google Gemini-Enhanced AI Assistant in Vehicles by 2026

General Motors (GM) is set to introduce a conversational AI assistant powered by Google Gemini in its vehicles, beginning next year. This initiative, announced at the GM Forward event in New York City, joins other tech advancements aimed at enhancing driver experiences. Unlike features like automated driving, which won’t be available until 2028, the Gemini integration capitalizes on GM’s existing “Google built-in” system found in brands like Buick and Chevrolet. The new AI assistant promises more natural, human-like conversations, enabling drivers to draft messages, plan routes with stops, and receive maintenance alerts. It aims to connect seamlessly with OnStar for personalized assistance, offering features such as climate control and vehicle data access. GM is prioritizing user control over data, a response to past controversies about customer data usage. This move positions GM alongside other automakers like Tesla and Mercedes in leveraging generative AI technology.
