Google Cloud Outage Causes Significant Disruption to OpenAI and Cloudflare Services

admin

On June 12, Google Cloud experienced a significant outage affecting numerous services, including Gmail, Google Drive, OpenAI, Spotify, and Shopify. The problem originated from an improper automated quota update to the API management system, leading to disruptions across the US, Europe, and Asia. During the peak, DownDetector reported nearly 15,000 incident reports. The issues began around 8 PM Irish time and were mostly resolved within three hours, although full restoration took over six hours. Cloudflare’s services were partially impacted, but its core operations remained unaffected. Other platforms like Amazon’s Twitch, Snapchat, Microsoft’s GitHub, and Mailchimp also faced outages. By around 10 PM Irish time, Google announced that the majority of its Cloud products were back online, with complete resolution confirmed later. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian expressed regret for the disruption caused to customers.
