Roughly two weeks ago, Google Docs introduced a significant feature: text-to-speech functionality that enables documents to be read aloud, catering to those who prefer auditory learning. Currently available only on Google Docs for web/desktop, projections suggest an imminent release for the Android app, as indicated by findings from code sleuth AssembleDebug. The app’s recent build hints at a similar text-to-speech model development. Users can expect a play icon FAB above the edit (pencil) icon, which, when tapped, activates the reading feature, powered by Google’s Gemini. A small media player will appear to indicate processing, eventually displaying a full timeline for playback. While options for different voice styles and playback speeds are anticipated, they weren’t found in the current code. Notably, audio buttons from the web version function in the Android app, hinting at core feature integration. Expect further enhancements as the release approaches.
