Google Gemini AI Now Available to Users in Russia

Russian users have unexpectedly gained access to Google’s AI chatbot, Google Gemini, which is now available on the web and as a mobile app for Android and iOS. This development comes as a surprise, given that Google ceased its commercial operations in Russia in 2022 and dismantled its local legal entity in 2023. The reasons for this sudden availability remain unclear, with speculation that it might be accidental. Google Gemini, first launched in March 2023, had been restricted in Russia until now. The advanced AI model, which boasts superior reasoning and coding capabilities compared to rivals like OpenAI, DeepSeek, Grok, and Claude, is fully translated into Russian and can understand voice queries. While the chatbot is accessible via gemini.google.com, Russian users face challenges downloading the app through Google Play or the App Store due to account restrictions. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains unavailable in Russia.
