In 2026, GM will integrate Google Gemini, a conversational AI assistant, into its vehicles. This innovative system will enhance user experience by accessing vehicle data for maintenance alerts, route planning, and controlling features like heating and air conditioning remotely. Gemini aims to surpass the current “Google built-in” OS by providing improved voice recognition, overcoming common frustrations associated with existing voice assistants. Notably, Gemini will include web integration, allowing users to inquire about local landmarks, enhancing the driving experience. The assistant will be available as an over-the-air upgrade for Onstar-equipped vehicles from model year 2015 onward. GM is also prioritizing privacy, giving drivers control over shared information after recent FTC scrutiny. Upcoming initiatives include a self-driving platform and a custom-built AI chatbot, set for 2028, which will lead to phasing out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This project will further solidify GM’s commitment to innovative automotive technology.
