Google ($GOOG) is set to provide its Gemini AI service free to over 500 million Reliance Jio users for 18 months, marking a significant step in its $15 billion investment in India’s rapidly expanding AI market. This partnership aims to empower young users aged 18–25 with enhanced AI tools, including Gemini 2.5 Pro and 2TB of cloud storage, typically valued at ₹35,100 ($396). Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted the initiative as a way to broaden AI access across India, which is poised to become a global AI hub.
Other tech competitors like Perplexity AI and OpenAI are also launching free plans for Indian users, tapping into this lucrative market. India boasts nearly 1 billion internet users, providing a fertile ground for AI adoption and digital growth. As the nation moves toward regulating AI content, Google’s free rollout is expected to further accelerate user engagement and strengthen its market position against rivals like OpenAI and Meta.
